This poster examines how the state of the north-central Peruvian anchovy stock responds to natural and fishing-related pressures in a highly variable pelagic ecosystem. The analysis focuses on critical points, non-linear responses, and potential thresholds associated with changes in biological, ecological, demographic, and spatial indicators of stock state.

Scientific contribution

Small pelagic fish populations may respond non-linearly to environmental variability and fishing pressure. In the Peruvian upwelling ecosystem, changes in climate forcing, oceanographic conditions, habitat availability, fishing pressure, and population structure can generate abrupt changes rather than gradual responses.

The contribution develops a stock-state diagnostic perspective based on pressure-response relationships and uses the north-central Peruvian anchovy (Engraulis ringens) as an applied case study. The framework is intended to support ecosystem-informed assessment by identifying potential thresholds, warning signals, and state transitions relevant to adaptive management.
