Scientific question

How have catch, effort, operational behaviour, fishing modes, and species composition changed in the Peruvian tuna purse-seine fishery, and how are these patterns related to environmental variability?

Evidence base

The project uses fishing logbooks, trip and set information, vessel characteristics, catch composition, size information, fishing-mode classifications, and environmental covariates inside and outside the Peruvian exclusive economic zone.

Methods

  • Descriptive analysis of catch, effort, and nominal CPUE.
  • Spatial grids, centres of gravity, distributional indices, and hotspot analysis.
  • Comparisons among fishing modes and fleet segments.
  • Standardized CPUE using generalized, mixed, additive, and spatio-temporal models.
  • Blocked spatial and temporal cross-validation.
  • Environmental association and habitat modelling.

Current status

Active thesis and publication programme. One component focuses on the historical and operational characterization of the fishery, while another develops standardized abundance indices and environmental models.
